Research Interests:

Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the effects of cardiac yoga on sleep, depression and quality of life to patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery.
Materials and Methods: This randomized controlled trial was conducted with 60 patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery in the cardiovascular surgery service and intensive care clinic of a university hospital in Izmir between January 2023 and May 2023 and met the inclusion criteria. The patients in the cardiac yoga group (n=30) applied every other day on the 3rd day after surgery and until the 12th week, while the patients in the control group (n=30) did not receive any intervention other than routine care. The research data were collected using the "Personal Information Form", "Physiological Parameters", "Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)", "BECK Depression Inventory (BDI)" and "World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale-Short Form". Appropriate statistical methods were used in the analysis of the data.
Results: The mean age of the patients participating in the study was 58.20±6.37 years, 63.3% were male, 43.3% were primary and high school graduates and 50.0% were retired. Chronic disease was detected in 93.3% of the patients in the intervention and control groups. It was found that the sleep and quality of life of the patients in the intervention group were higher than the control group after the after the practice and their depression level was lower.
Conclusion: Integrating a structured cardiac yoga program into postoperative nursing care may significantly enhance psychosocial recovery. Cardiac yoga appears to be a feasible, low-cost, and effective nonpharmacological intervention supporting early rehabilitation after cardiovascular surgery.
