Impact of Major Environmental Changes (COVID-19) on Social Support and Resilience in Individuals with Schizophrenia Attending Day Hospital Services

Huang Su-Jung has Currently a Nurse Practitioner at Taipei Hospital, MOHW, with clinical expertise in psychiatry, emergency, and palliative care. Adjunct lecturer at Fu Jen Catholic University, teaching psychiatric nursing and empathy training. Her research focuses on resilience and quality of patient care.
Research Interests:
This longitudinal observational study investigated the association between social support and resilience in 50 individuals with schizophrenia attending a psychiatric day hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were collected at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months using validated scales for resilience and social support. Results revealed a significant positive correlation between overall social support and resilience (p < 0.01). Family support, particularly emotional and instrumental support, significantly enhanced resilience, especially during the first 6 months of the pandemic. Support from the treatment team played a critical role in later recovery phases (p < 0.01), while support from friends showed a moderate effect on emotional stability and social engagement (p < 0.05). Findings underscore the importance of strengthening family and professional support systems in clinical practice to improve psychological adaptation and long-term outcomes for individuals with schizophrenia.
